A Poem - Tattered White Dress
A small girl in tattered white dress
A melting ice cream clasped in her hand
A straw hat dangling over her head
Make me understand
Her world; my world
Could they possibly collide?
Could I step into hers?
She turns and sees me - a subtle smile gracing her dry lips
A smile so pure; a smile so forlorn
A tanned hand reaches out - welcoming, inviting
An innocent gesture, almost childlike in the blameless hope in which it speaks for
How long have you been standing there - waiting for someone to toss a coin unto your bare feet?
Toasted by the sun, ignored by many
An answer comes, dawning realization strikes
"Please spare me a coin."
Along with her words comes again that little smile that speaks of trials and hardships
Move, my hand, move and reach out to her
Who am I looking at - ?
A whisper, out of my choked throat
- "Make me worthy of your trust." / A girl in tattered white dress
